The United States Air Force (USAF) has established the P6 Combat Training System (P6 CTS) as its next-generation air combat training program, Collins Aerospace announced at the 2022 Farnborough International Air Show.
The system will replace air combat maneuvering instrumentation (ACMI) at approximately 55 USAF training ranges. The USAF’s priority is to integrate the P6 CTS on fighter aircraft, followed by trainers, bombers, cargo and other platforms, according to Collins.
The company’s Increment II Tactical Combat Training System (TCTS II) provides synthetic injection-to-live (SITL) capability by taking virtual (simulator) or constructive (synthetic) entities and injecting them into the environment real. This capability allows aircraft to detect their existence, as well as any actual participants, and react to them during the training event.
These entities can include ships or ground air defense (GBAD) units, as well as aircraft. TCTS II will interact with and simulate threat warning systems on the aircraft, reported either by the system mounted on the aircraft or by a ground station.
TCTS II has multiple independent security levels (MILS) and cross-domain capability. MILS capability is critical because much of the data generated by fifth-generation aircraft is classified and requires a secure environment. MILS enables the transmission of data to different classifications, allowing various users and players to access data at the appropriate level, allowing fourth generation aircraft and coalition forces to participate in the same training event.
The initial TCTS II solution is pod-mounted, but company officials are developing an in-house variant for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, said Shane Anderson, director of business development for Collins. “There’s still a lot of work to do on that,” he said.
