Rick Dawson’s RED TR-Racing (G1) Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike Strike ran a half-mile Saturday at trainer Eric Reed’s Mercury Training Center in Lexington, scoring his first timed move since he finished sixth in the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 11.
Keen Ice’s son was clocked in :50.40 for all four furlongs to kick off his preparations for the Run happy Travers Stakes (G1) Aug. 27 at Saratoga. His training was brought forward a day due to the threat of severe thunderstorms in the area.
“It was a really easy job,” Reed told the BloodHorse. “But he behaved and he didn’t try to do too much, which interested me more than anything since I tried to refresh him. But he was actually very, very at the comfortable in the work, just super easy. So very happy with it.
Rich Strike upset 80-1 in the Kentucky Derby, winning by three-quarter lengths of favorite Epicenter. Jumping the Preakness (G1) he then finished without a place in the 1 1/2 mile of Belmont. The Travers is run at the Kentucky Derby 1 1/4 mile distance.
Reed added that Rich Strike would work again around July 16 before being shipped to Churchill Downs, where he would have some work before heading to upstate New York.
