Referee training day helps keep officials looking their best | BC Loop

Curl BC’s 2022-23 Umpire Roster Development Day at the Richmond Curling Center was a success. The event was hosted by Meets Officials Coordinator Phil Mckenzie and Education Officials Coordinator Henry Wong.

More than 15 Curl BC umpires collaborated in person at the Richmond Curling Center and many more attended via Zoom for a day of team building, education, training and review of best practices during playing field supervision for Curl BC competitive events.

The first two hours consisted of a presentation that prepared match referees, assistant head referees and head referees to assume a leadership role at the Curl BC Zone/Open Qualifiers and British Columbia Championships. British in 2022-23.

After lunch, our team of umpires took to the ice for a review of on-ice/playing field protocols, including making final stone draw measurements with triangulation. The referees had the opportunity to perform various measurements in a scenario-based situation with the mentorship of other referees in attendance. This opportunity has ensured that, when the time comes, we take action effectively, efficiently and with confidence.

The webinar component of the development day will be presented again on the evening of November 27e, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. PST. Please register for the webinar HERE if you are interested in the training. This will be a presentation by the Championship Officials Coordinator followed by a question and answer period.
