MARQUETTE — Five athletes from Northern Michigan University’s U.S. national training site weightlifting team earned All-American status at the National College Championships held March 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
Athletes had to do clean and jerk and snatch lifts that met American standards set by USA Weightlifting. This was the first year USA Weightlifting awarded All-American titles at the National College Championships.
“The inclusion of All-American titles will help support our ongoing goal of increasing weightlifting participation at the college level,” said Suzy Sanchez, Director of Culture, Community and Outreach for USA Weightlifting.
NMU’s Ryland Shriver broke his All-American total lift standard at 109 kilograms (240.3 pounds) by 19 kg (41.9 pounds) with a total of 330 kg (727.5 pounds). He won his weight division overall, snatch and clean and jerk.
The other four honored competitors from the North exceeded their All-American standard by three to seven kg (6.6 to 15.4 lb).
Lukas Zielke, at 67 kg (147.7 lb), won his weight class with a total of 246 kg (542.3 lb).
Second in her division was Ella Holden at 55 kg (121.3 lb) after lifting a total of 165 kg (363.8 lb).
Calvin La and Lander Wells finished third. In the 73 kg (160.9 lb) division, La lifted 260 kg (573.2 lb), while at 89 kg (196.2 lb), Wells lifted 282 kg (621.7 lb).
