Gwinnett Co. Police rookie dies on first day of physical training – CBS Atlanta

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) – Gwinnett County Police say Ronald Donat, 41, a police recruit, had just joined their 112th training academy, but his new career took a hit. unexpected and sad ending during the first day of physical training.

Training began around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Police say Donat had just completed a section of pull-ups. “Mr. Ronald started to feel sluggish about 45 minutes into training,” said Gwinnett Police Public Information Officer Hideshi Valle. “He was immediately told by training staff to s ‘sit down and rest. Mr Ronald tried to continue the exercises but was still a bit confused,’ she said.

They contacted emergency services and performed CPR before crews arrived. Donat later died at a local hospital. It is not known if he had any underlying medical issues. “All recruits are medically assessed and cleared before starting an academy,” Valle said. Officers say recruits must also pass a state-mandated physical fitness test before joining the force. “We will continue to assess our training standards and ensure that all recruits and pre-recruits complete their medicals,” Valle said.

According to police, Donat was the first known recruit to die during training. “It’s an emotional time here for Gwinnett County Police, training staff and recruits. We have procedures in place to ensure they receive counseling services,” Valle said.

She said the police informed the next of kin and the medical examiner was looking into the cause of death.
